Or I am being harsh? I see talk shows, listen to radio programs, read the news, and look around myself and am shocked with the way people handle their affairs or the way certain societies handle themselves.
I also read the Darwin Awards on line and tsk, tsk, tsk - could the world really be filled with this many idiots? Here's an example of stupidity: A couple I know, who are having problems, decided to have a baby, thinking it will bring them "closer together."
Stupid, no? Why do people not think things through?

Yes, it does seem like it sometimes. George Carlin said it best when he said: "Think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that."
I blame the media for some of this. They do not show the average person, they may think they are but I think they tend to show people they think are dumb. This is because they think they are above average or else everyone would working in their field. Of course, it may just be that more cameras mean more stupid people get on camera, while the actual percentage is the same as always.
It's often true that the average person is ignorant, but that is not the same as stupid. People have to specialize a lot in this economy for employment, however, we seem to have to generalize more in the rest of our lives. It's turmoil.
In addition to media types trying to dumb down their audience, the pundits go to great lengths to stir up anger by turning every minor issue into a political football. Then they expect the average person to be an expert in everything.
The churches do it too. They lose members to other religions and philosophies and so they need to invent born-again virginity because hellfire and damnation just doesn't have the same oomph it did in the pre-atomic age.
Then there is that last bastion of political hope: the Supreme Court of the United States. The Presidency and legislative houses have become derelict or obnoxious in their duties, so we try to give power to people we assume are non-partisan. They may be unbiased for now, but recent confirmation hearings put that future in jeopardy, if it isn't failing already.
What this country needs is a reboot. A Constitution 2.0 for the 21st century. Let's just hope we get a better instruction manual this time.

Abso-freakin-lutely! I'd say that 90% of all people in this world are drooling, uneducated, uncouth, trainwreck-of-a-brain morons. Frankly I'm amazed we've been able to get this far as a species. Even countries like the USA are doing a sad sad job of educating students. I went from a math whiz in the 3rd grade to a math dunce by the end of the 6th grade thanks to the "gifted class" teachers neglecting their students' individual needs. Duhhhh...me smarter now...ooga booga.
I know it's easy to blame TV and other forms of media for it, but most shows sure as hell aren't trying to make anybody smarter! Take the cancelled HBO series Carnivale for example. A phenominal show of mindblowing beauty and captivating complexity. A show that made you think and debate and wonder. It was cancelled, because, among other reasons, not enough people watched (which turned out to be flat wrong). In its place, HBO is producing more low budget brain tranquilizers because it's "easier for the public to absorb". Just look at most of the major networks' programming. Desperate Housewives? Reality TV? Perfect examples of why I mostly just watch stuff like the Discovery Channel.
Modern conveniences and our government's willingness to subsidize the lazy have helped in the proliferation of sub-standard intelligence. People with brains make the big bucks and proceed to get heavily taxed to support people who'd rather stay drunk all day and watch Jerry Springer. What's wrong with this picture?
100 years ago (especially in the 19th century and all the way back from there), if you didn't bust your *** and pull your weight each day, you'd DIE. More and more 21st century folks could use a taste of what it's really like to have to use your brain to stay alive.

No. I think the world is filled with perfectly sane, rational, hard working people. It's just that the idiots and losers tend to stand out in a crowd.
