Congratulations for being accepted into one of the finest colleges in Alabama! I am a long time resident of B'ham and had relatives who lived in Gasden and Huntsville. I watched the college grow year after year. It has grown a lot from the Agricultural and Mechanical college that I knew and loved. I can't offer you anything specific to that college, but as a former college grad and teacher, I would recommend that you stay focused. It's so easy to get into PARTYMODE and forget what your real goals and purposes are supposed to be. Much depends on maturity and I believe you are just that so you should have no problems - always consult your counselors/advisors 'before' you get into academic trouble. Get to know students who have interests like yours. Find a church to attend - it will help you stay spiritual. When I was in school, I went through a couple of roomates. One only wanted to party and sleep with her boyfriend (in our room!), and the other was a smoker (smoking was against the rules). Even though I had to pay for it - I decided living alone was best for me -I still had friends, but my room was all mine - and I made the decisions there. Write your folks often! (we tend to want to call all the time....but there is nothing like getting a letter weekly from your child.) Be industrial - find things you can do to help make yourself some money (that is, if you don't have a job). I was able to crochet and made all the hats and scarves for the frats. (They loved me! At that time - computers were few - and I could type - so I had a business typing papers. I found that I enjoyed evening classes better - and I was able to get the jobs that nobody wanted because it meant staying up all night. I was able to study and work. Dress up every now and then - if only for yourself. Best wishes to you.....
