We came to our small quiet town from Chicago. Our kids, like many others here, dress in the "Hip-Hop" style. But because we came from Chicago, he literally said, "If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it is a duck." I invited him to run a criminal check if he was so sure. I don't know if he ever did.

this has been the same over the past years in all social levels..and races..etc. remember when all long hairs.. were considered hippie degenerates.. and refused jobs etc. what do you think when you see piercings and tatoos.? how about fishnet stockings. there are stereotypes and misconceptions.. for every occasion. and the media..does not help..and the hip hop reputations of some musical artists adds to the scenario. it is like being judged by the company you keep. if all your friends were classied as loose ladies..then u were too. the one good thing..that you can be proud of and that made the cop look dumb is the criminal check. GOOD FOR YOU. if he would have found a record..then he could have smirked and said..see i knew it. and that would have made his stinkin day

Maybe he didn't know you are a diamond in the rough. Using cliche's like that duck one, is like the other saying....if doesn't gel, it's not jello...etc.My older brother tried to teach me, not to use cliches, because it's a short cut to really giving thought to something, anything for that matter. The police have a very difficult job to do. It is true too, if a person looks suspicious you don't want to take any chances. Maybe your children have been seen communicating with the local "ducks". Teach them to stay away from the wrong crowd.

There are all kinds of old adages that go along with that one. Unfortunately you're going to find that everyone is going to make those kinds of assumptions; I'd be willing to bet that you yourself misjudge based on looks or behavior from time to time. Unfortunately if you don't know someone personally all you really have to make a judgment call on is what you see them wearing, who you see them hanging out with, and the way they speak.

I would recommend doing something that makes them stand out as exceptional, something that sets them apart as better than those they hang out with. Whether it's the fact that they're better groomed than the other kids, in at curfew, known for helping out a neighbor, not being seen hanging out with the "bad" kids, getting better grades than those around them. Pretty soon your kids will have a reputation of not being like the "ducks," people will see you are raising swans and testify to it.

New place, new ropes...you'll get the hang of it.

P.S. A lot of cities have a volunteer program where kids can spend some time helping out at their local police station, or you can just schedule a walk through with a local police officer.

If you ever get the chance see the movie Crash. It deals with the exact issue you are facing. For police men, and not making any excuses, the job tends to change them after a while. As far as the children go, fortunately, your children have been raised with respect and morals. Most children today are not raised that way. We live in a very quiet area in Maine. My son likes to wear that hip hop stuff. I dress him in that because that's what he likes. I have yet to run into the issue you are faced with, but you hang in there. Your children will prove that policeman wrong.

LMAO ... when the certain neighborhood produces most of the individuals that commit the street crimes in a city. Not to mention the repeat offenders and individuals that make the violent crime rate skyrocket. It's a fair assumption that anyone the police come in contact with from that neighborhoods is involved in criminal activities or knows someone who commits crimes.

Because, environment plays a vital role in raising a child (influence through environment). There is a high possiblity that a child in the neighborhood of a gangster, may become one if mingled and associated with the group. A neighborhood of known drug sources, children in vicinity may be tempted to try this and eventually get them hook into drugs, not only by mere using it, it may sometimes lead to peddling in order to sustain their needs. In this regard, the role of the parents are of paramount importance. Parents/guardians are to be vigilant and watchful on the child daily activities.
