when rodents run on their wheel in their cage, do they think they're going anywhere or do they know that they're in the same spot the whole time?

Not sure, but I have a mouse and he loves to run on that wheel. I personally dont think they're that stupid, they just have nothing else to do in that lil cage that they resort to what we probably would if we were stuck in a room with only a tredmill.

Hamsters have an instinct left over from when their ancestors were wild to run for long distances in order to get food. It could be that this instict helps it to survive by keeping it on the move between food and its house. But It probably knows it's going nowhere, it just has an instinctive "need" to run for a long distance, and the wheel lets it do that.

I'm sure they know they aren't really going anywhere... just good way to get rid of some energy and have some fun for them I think.
