It depends on what you mean by hold their heads up. A baby who is wide awake and upright may hold her/his head up reliably even from birth. A baby who is lying on her/his stomach or asleep will do it much later. Check out the Web site in the sources section below.

My little one started holding his head up about 2 1/2 to 3 months old. It all depends on the baby.

My baby starting trying to hold his head up at two weeks but wasn't successful yet, but now at six weeks he hold his head up for couples minutes at a time. It really just depends on the baby and when they are ready, it varies.

Most can hold their head up at about a month but some sooner. And they should be able to hold their head up when in a sitting postion at about 4 months.

Everyone's different but usually around 1 - 3 mo's is when they start holding it up on thier own and master it around 4 months.
