I'm not sure what you can build on $500. It may be better to just buy one. I usually buy from Dell. Try them. You should be able to get a decent one. Just go to www.dell.com

Building your own computer is always the best to do it. You just have to make sure that all of the parts that you buy are able to work with each other, you can just buy what looks good or cool and put them all together, you have to make sure that everything is compatible. Sometimes it is really hard to build a good computer with $500, but if you have patience and look around you can prolly find the right things. Make sure you know what you are buying before you buy it because if you buy a really good graphics card or something, then you will have to buy a mother board that will support it, and a CPU for the motherboard and RAM for it as well.
I would recommend buying the motherboard first because once you get that, then you jut buy the things that will fit in it.
Good site for supplies would be www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, and www.outpost.com

I advise staying away from pre-manufactured computers. Such as those from Dell, HP, Sony, Compaq. They don't use the best parts.
Check out http://www.newegg.com
Tons of parts there, and pretty reasonable prices.
There is also pricewatch.com, zipzoomfly.com. I like Newegg the best though. They have user reviews.
As for building one. Its not that hard. In January of last year I built my own. They only thing I did was read some online guides on how to put one together. Then again, computers are my love in life.
A guide for you to use. http://www.tomshardware.com/2002/09/04/building_your_own_pc/index.html
They also review a lot of parts and run performance tests to see how they do. You might want to check out Intel's new line of processors. Conroe. They are pretty cheap and outperform AMD's hottest chips in some tests.
As for what you need: Case, Power Supply, Motherboard, CPU, RAM, graphics card, hard drive, and DVD/CD drive. If you already have a monitor use that one. Same with mouse, keyboard and speakers.

For $500 you are better to buy than build and might want to look at used. If you are going high grade or into gaming then build, you can choose the processor and chip packs to get the speed and performance, but It is going to cost much, much more than $500 for custom performance. Go to the library and look for magazines like Computing or PC Gamer, they will clue you in pretty fast.

Yes, you should build your own. It is much better than the ready-made ones.
Good thing- you can chose the parts of your like. Can chose much better brands.
Bad thing-If you don't know how to do it, then....you will know what will happen!!!
Actually you can go to a computer store, then tell them to build up for you with the parts provided by you.

Only if you know what you are doing. We received our computer that was not the one we ordered and a friend added the parts we needed and I hate it and I am going to get a new one with all in it. It is OK but just a pain to mess with.I also think the person that worked on it went to welding school instead of computer school ! LOL

Motherboard- my innovations are a Nvidia chipset with an Intel processor socket, or an Intel motherboard, the two are good, and pass with an ATX motherboard length as they have two times as many concepts than a mATX motherboard 4.) CD/DVD-ROM/±RW Drives- i might pass with very nearly any enterprise right here, as all of them final long 5.) troublesome drives- i might decide for a troublesome tension that satisfies your decide for for cabinet area, if your making plans on gaming along with your laptop, i reccomend a Western digital Raptor X a hundred and fifty GB, as that plenty video games swifter than a common troublesome tension 6.) CPU Fan- i reccomend going with a marvelous CPU Fan this is actual reviewed with intense comments, as weaker CPU followers will harm your CPU somewhat than help it 7.) CPU- i reccomend a Intel middle 2 Duo, besides the undeniable fact that it relies upon on your cash bypass and concepts, and pass with a processor that suits your motherboard CPU socket, as a socket 775 processor won't fit in a Socket AM2+ and vice versa 8.) portraits Card (aka Video Card)- i reccomend a Nvidia Geforce branded portraits card, yet this additionally relies upon on your cash bypass and concepts, and pass with a PCI-show card, as thats the known now. 9.)
