Maybe he is right... It just so happens that all the important wars of the Western world in the last few thousand years are based on religion. It also happens that since Judaism apparently existed before every other religion in the West, and they laid claim to the land known as Israel, and since Muslims and Christians also have a special connection to Jerusalem/Israel/Palestine, religious wars are centered there.
Now, if Christianity was the force laying claim onto the land, he may or may not have accused Christians, though I don't think that he would since he is Christian himself, and also that the Christians of the Western world would have easily totally defeated the Middle East by now.

Certainly because both he and his Father are Anti-Semitics.
People who are drunk have a tendency to say what they actually do believe.
Appologising later for these utterances is a futile exercise as he is well known as an Anti-Semite.
He should be honest enough to stand up, while sober and admit to this, at the very least he would be more respected.

If Mel Gibson said that, then he would have lost half his brain cells, and is suffering from dementia... He should be pitied, but not taken seriously, as I understand that he may have been on a downward spiral in his rationality. I've always feared that all those "Lethal Weapon" stunts may have done irreparable damage to his brain functions... it's sad, but it happens... Just ignore the man... we need to "humor" him so that he can keep the illusion of his dignity intact... No one DESERVES dementia... poor guy!
