The number of embryos can be seen quite early--about 4 weeks but the sex can't be determined til about 18 weeks.

if your levels from your bloodtests come back high this can indicate a multiple birth. It's not always the case though, the dr will do an ultrasound to check. At the routine 5mth check up they tell you the gender if you want to know that is. If you had an ultrasound for some reason early on they'll be able to tell you how many you're expecting.

Many hospitals will do a preliminary ultrasound which is done with a long wand that is inserted through the birth canal. This ultrasound will be performed shortly after you test positive for pregnancy in a hospital and it will tell you right away if you are carrying one or more.

I saw that I was having twins at around 5-1/2 weeks. Before that, I saw 3 sacs, but everything was so small that it was hard to be sure...

they can tell you your going to have twins at the first ultrasound they can tell you the gender between 4 and 5 months

Actually, it is 16 weeks- I had my first son in January, and I just found out that I am 16 weeks along again- with another boy
