green stuff growing on bark

its a huge tree and the trunk of tree gets alot of sun on all sides. is covered in light green stuff-i'd say 50% covered

I am going to guess that is primarily on one side, NORTH!
If so it is just moss and it usually grows on the darkest side under big trees. It can be pressure washed off with soap and water if it really bothers you, I think it lends character to the tree and yard.

it's algae. spray the trunk with a pressure washer and cut off some of the lower-hanging branches that are shading the trunk and allowing the algae to grow. avoid having your lawn mower spit the clipped grass up against your tree trunk when mowing the lawn.

just leave it it wont hurt the tree at all

A LITTLE MORE INFO WOULD BE GOOD BUT IT COULD BE MOSS OR ALGAE IF THEY ARE IN A SHADY HUMID AREA.
