New Hampshire is a state, in New England, in the U.S.A. Gene can be in New England and New Hampshire at the same time because New England is a large region that is made up of several northeastern states.
The book is set during World War II. So all these 15 and 16 year old boys are facing military duty once they graduate. If I recall, that's even why they're taking a summer session of classes. The school squeezes a whole year's worth of classes into the summer, so when fall term starts the boys will be seniors and that much closer to graduating and going out to help fight the war.

I read the book in high school in 1965. It was 1 of 5 we were assigned to read. You are getting very hung up on the setting which isn't that important. Also, New Hampshire is in New England. Stick to the message of the book.

Buddy, you need to have what is called "prior knowledge" before reading books, like knowledge of your own 50 states! New England is a REGION, not a state!!!! It is comprised of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. You are not a big reader, are you?

I read that book in school. It was very interesting, learning about how relationships between boys work, even though I have brothers, it still was news to me. I remember bits of that book to this day. And if you ever get confused by a portion of a book, just skip over it, it will usually be explained again later if it's important.

If you are having trouble with the setting after one chapter, then reread that one chapter again. Reading is comprehension and if you don't understand the story, you are not reading it (you are just calling the words)...check out a summary of the book on sparks...then read the book...it will make more sense...kinda like getting a book intro then doing the reading...it is not cheating to read sparks...just read the text too

This novel is about friendship and betrayal, admiration and jealousy, opportunity and regret. It's about male group behavior and self-perception. Selflessness and selfishness. It's about being a boy and becoming a man.
This is some thematic grist for your project. Now read the book and enjoy it before analyzing it.

Right, the setting is not as important as the relationships of the boys. Don't get bogged down, keep reading, and you will get into the story.

Interpret this the way you will. i think of Gene observed himself, and who he had to be in Finny. He lost that dream whilst he lost Finny. it quite is in simple terms like combat club, in case you have considered that...Edward Norton's character needs to be Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), and creates te character...He sees his very own skill in an exterior source...
