277 million dollars of revenue

Believe me their revenue is a million times more than that, so they do make a lot of profits. It's been said that George Steinbrenner can spend up to $400m on players, and he will still make a lot of profits.

Most of their money comes from owning the Yes Network - the network that broadcast the Yankee games(The Boss owns that network and it makes millions of money - from advertising).

Secondly, Yankees merchandise (including the logo) fetches a lot more money than any other baseball teams' in MLB.

In short, the Yankee organization is worth a lot of money, so spending $198m on players is nothing. You can check the Forbes list. They always make an annual list of the most valuable teams in the world. The Yankees rank up there with Manchester United, and some other high profile teams.

According to Forbes, their 2005 revenue was $277 million, with $50 million going to operation expenses. Even with an increase to a $200 million payroll, it seems that they'd be clearing a profit:

The funny thing is, I don't think Steinbrenner even cares about making the money, except for the fact that he can keep paying more in his efforts to win. I don't like the Yankees, but I gotta' admire that attitude.
