I once lived in massachusetts and I could never get hold of anybody, even the lowest elected officials.
As soon as I moved to northern Michigan I noticed that its much easier to get hold of my representative. I just walked into a resturaunt and sat next to him and talked for a while.
He was a pretty normal guy, he had been a police officer. He mentioned something about how his son comminted suicide with his service revolver while on antidepressants, which I imagine spurred him to run for office.
I feel that my government is looking after me very well. Crime isnt exactly rampant here, and where I live has more people than springfield massachusetts, but less than 1/10th the crime.
The local deputies are really nice, which is the oposite of the brutal western mass police. Especially if your hispanic or black.

I think that on a large scale politics is corrupt, but on the small scale, most of it is genuine, especially in the midwest and plain states. I will never move tho the east coast, or a liberal (not democrat, liberal, as in pushing change even when not warranted) city again.
