For the trip out I suggest 'Lost' a good read about some friends on a flight in South America and their adventures on the mountain after an unexpected quick landing,
If you are going to the beach, perhaps Jaws? a good fishing story.
Country house? Perhaps Texas Chainsaw, a rivetting read about a chap who welcomes strangers into his house and shows the school of butchery quick method.

What about something lightweight like Jordans autobiography? Wuthering heights is a brilliant book and fits the description.

marion keyes is always good for that - but if you want a sweet, romantic book, read 'p.s. i love you' by cecilia ahern. good book.
