Something else to keep in mind...
Blocked shots and steals have only been an official NBA stat since 1974 (the year after Wilt Chamberlain retired).
However, had blocked shots been officially tracked when Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell (who retired in 1969) were playing, they would have had numerous quadruple doubles using points, rebounds, assists and blocked shots (and might have had a quintuple double, as both were very adept at stealing the ball as well).
Newspaper accounts of Chamberlain and Russell's game routinely mentioning them blocking 10-12 shots in a game (teams, and reporters kept their own stats on this if they had a great shot blocker like Wilt or Russell).
Considering the fact that Wilt:
1) Averaged 30 ppg over his career
2) Was NEVER under double figures in rebounds in any game in his career
3) led the NBA in assists one season (the only non-guard ever to do so) and
4) was the greatest shot blocker ever
There's no doubt that he would have far more triple and quadruple doubles than any player in history.
Even without giving him credit for blocked shots, Wilt is officially third on the all time triple-double list:
Oscar Robertson / 181 triple doubles
Magic Johnson / 138
Wilt Chamberlain / 78
Jason Kidd / 75 (as of May 14, 2006)
Larry Bird / 59.
Only four "official" quadruple doubles have evern been recorded:
* Nate Thurmond, October 18, 1974, Chicago vs. Atlanta; 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, 12 blocks
* Alvin Robertson, February 18, 1986, San Antonio vs. Phoenix; 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals
* Hakeem Olajuwon, March 29, 1990, Houston vs. Milwaukee; 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 11 blocks
* David Robinson, February 17, 1994, San Antonio vs. Detroit; 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks
There's also such a thing as a "double-triple-double", meaning getting 20 or more in three categories. Wilt is the only player to do this: in a 1968 game, Chamberlain's statistics were 22 points, 25 rebounds, and 21 assists.
Wilt also holds the record for the most consecutive triple-doubles. In January of 1968 he recorded a triple-double in 9 straight games.

Recording double digits in any two of the five main stat categories (Points, Blocks, Rebounds, Steals, Assists) in the same game.
Example: Scoring 20 points and getting 10 Rebounds.
A Triple Double is doing 3 of those in the same game.
Example: 20 points, 10 Rebounds, 10 Assists.
There have also been 4 instances of quadruple-doubles in which four of those 5 things was accomplished by one player in the same game.
Most recently David Robinson had 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks in one game in 1994 against Detroit.
So far, in the NBA, nobody has ever recorded double digits in all 5 categories in the same game.

It means you are in double digits in any of the key individual stats: points, rebounds, assists, and blocked shots. If you have two or more of those categories that are in double digits for one game, then you have a double double. A triple double would then mean you are in double digits in 3 of those categories. Only the best players get those. A quadruple double would be having double digits in all four categories. While it's technically possible, I doubt it has ever happened.

A double-double is a basketball term, defined as an individual performance in a game in which a player accumulates a double digit number total in any two of these categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots. The most common double-double is a combination of points and rebounds, and then next is points and assists.
Double-doubles, unlike the more difficult triple-doubles (or ultra-rare quadruple-doubles), are very common in the NBA, and in fact there is usually at least one player in each NBA game that manages to record one. In each NBA season, rarely do more than a handful of players average a double-double.
During the 2005-06 season, only seven players who were eligible for leadership in the main statistical categories averaged a double-double for the entire season (listed in descending order of points per game) were Elton Brand, Shawn Marion, Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Dwight Howard and Troy Murphy. All of the above players averaged double figures in both points and rebounds except for Nash, whose categories were points and assists. All except Brand also averaged double-doubles in 2004-05.
Special double-doubles are rare "double double-doubles", in which a player at least scores 20 in two of the five categories, unthinkable "triple double-doubles" (respectively at least 30) and near-impossible "quadruple double-doubles", in which a player achieves the feat of logging at least 40 in two of five statistics. Gaining 40 in any category in basketball is already an impressive accomplishment (even more so if the category isn't point). This highly spectacular feat was achieved only once in NBA history, by Wilt Chamberlain, who once scored 78 points and grabbed 43 rebounds in a 1961 game for the Philadelphia Warriors against the Los Angeles Lakers
**when a player averages 20 or more points.**

A double-double is when a player has ten of any 2 stats. For instance.. If Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points and 10 rebounds, thats a double-double. Of course Dirk scores higher than that!!
