I have a 1992 Toyota 4Runner that won't start. When I turn the key, I can play the radio and put on the lights, but when I turn the key further to start the engine all I hear is a loud "click." Sometimes, if I leave the key in the ignition with the radio on for several minutes, I can turn the key further and it will start.

It never makes that chugging sound you hear sometimes like the engine is having trouble turning over. It simply either clicks or starts. What do you think? Thanks so much.

Like 0976 says, check the battery terminals FIRST. Buy one of those little tools designed for cleaning them. THEN apply some of that corrosion preventer to cure the problem.

This is a CLASSIC symptom of dirty terminals, and/or starter solenoid/motor.

More often than not, it's the terminals. Sometimes they don't even LOOK very dirty. It's on the INSIDE where you can't see it.

You would be AMAZED how many batteries are sold to people who have only dirty terminals that you can fix in 10 minutes for free.

Make sure the battery terminals are clean, clean them anyway, just to make sure, sometime they are dirty and you can't see it.

Make sure they are tight, if they are a little loose that can happen.

If you still have a problem, wiggle the ground wire that comes off the ground cable and connects to the car, sometimes if that little wire is bad, it will cause the car not to start.

Could also be the ignition switch in the car itself, it could be going bad.

One other thing, it could be the starter solenoid, that could be bad.

Sounds like you need the ignition switch replaced. Maybe there is a short in it.

THAT IS DEFINITELY A STARTER PROBLEM...IT HAS TO "CATCH" WHEN YOU TURN THE IGNITION....SOMETIMES IT DOES SOMETIMES NOT. IT COULD BE OK FOR A YEAR OR COULD GO OUT COMPLETELY TOMORROW. TO AVOID GETTING STRANDED, GET A NEW STARTER
