Tina G gave it most succinctly - most recognized by the public is Becks, though little Ronaldo might command the most respect for his skills right now (even after his no-show at the World Cup). If you want to limit it to US players (which may seem assanine, but just in case), Landon Donovan and Freddy Adu are the two poster boys for the sport in the country.

well Ronadinho is very popular in the field and out because he's fun to watch playing and marketable, he's more famous in other countries. But David beckham is popular in America and has lot's of endorsment deal also and he is big in other country but more in America I said it's because of his wife.
