At least 6, preferably 10. Always apply to at least 2 "safety schools" that you're absolutely SURE you'll get in to. Then apply to a handful of "reach" schools - your dream schools, like Harvard, that you think are unlikely dreams. Finally, spend your most time on the ones that you think are realistic but challenging. As many of those as you think would be a good fit for you.
It's not so much the number of schools as the types, but you can never apply for too many. The only limitation is to be sure to not overwhelm yourself. Focus first on the 6, then if you have time after you've put your best effort into those, then add one at a time until you've applied to all the ones you want.

First, find out which colleges have the PROGRAM that will enable you to reach your career goals. Then take into account where that school is, how large it is, its reputation, and what you can afford. I would apply to 5-6 AND another which I would consider a safety valve (a sure acceptance) in case the other schools rejected me or put me on a waiting list.
Good luck!!

probably 3 if you're pretty confident in your applications
personally though i applied to one in colorado (im from texas), got in, and i ended up with a renewable academic scholarship that i could have used towards tuition.
about two months later (january of my senior year) i decided i didnt want to leave texas and applied to texas state university and got in...so i never had too much to worry about.
so i guess if you wanted apply early to the one you want to go to most and if you get in great! but if you dont youll have plenty of time to apply for others. do apply to about 3, maybe up to 5, if you think they'll all accept you and you can make the choice of where you want to go.
