It is well known that you pick up all manner of disgusting material on your hands when you are in town from door handles, rails, coins, etc but if you decide to eat at MacDonalds or Burger King you discover that they provide no hand-wash station yet they expect you to eat with your fingers. If you challenge the staff they will point you to the toilets. Guess what? The door on the toilets always opens inwards! So by pulling on the handle you are relying on everyone who has used that place having washed their hands! Not a good idea, I think! But I have seen many a food court in a third world country with facilities for handwashing within the dining area. Isn't it time that the MacDonalds and Burger Kings stopped asking us to eat crap?

ewwwww! I often think about this. solution. do like they do in India and only eat with your clean hand... i can't remember the politeness rules for right or left hand, but one of your hands is used for doing dirty things (like wiping your @ss, or in your case pulling manky toilet door handles) and the other hand is for eating. thence you have no cross contamination. or you could use gloves. my question to you is why would you eat their food anyway. if you d0on't want to eat **** then don't eat fast food. only f@~* knows what goes in to their food and it probably isn't much better than what you could lick off that door handle...

Well , that happens everywhere, but you can use a paper towel to open the door, I do that if the place is really disgusting. Well I try not to eat in those places anyway Burger King is better, but I know people that have worked in McD and have told me a few horrible stories about what happens when you have to get a meal ready in less that 2 min, they don't do it intentionally, but there's no time to worry about hygiene ...
And even if they were OK, it's not healthy food anyway, so only eat there in an emergency

You can be sure that McDonalds is clean and HAS to live up to certain standards. There are secret shoppers who visit each restaurant from time to time to make sure the toilets are clean as the restaurant.

Wash your hands before leaving, most have air drying rather than paper drying. You can always carry a handkerchief or paper towel with you to open the doors.

Well, try using a paper towel to open the door. Or just carry those wet-napkins that come in the little packages around with you when you plan to eat fast food. They're sold in grocery stores, so it's not like they're rare or anything... Or you can just hold your burger or whatever in the wrapper so you don't have to touch it... As far as fries go, just dump those all in your mouth. Yum yum.

It is always your choice to eat at McDonalds, Burger King, or any restaraunt for that matter. I have a friend who owns a restaraunt and every time an employee uses the restroom he/she is required to wash his hands in the restroom and when he returns to the kitchen.

Not only is building unclean but it's well known that the FDA allows a certain amount of waste matter to get into the food that's shipped to restaurants. We should all grow our own food in our backyards and raise our own livestock so we know what we're eating!

Haha that's true but you can always bring little hand washing things with you, or hand sanitizer, and you can use a paper towel when opening the door to the bathroom

They don't. Studies have shown that there are in fact more than one hundred different places to eat. One popular alternative to the practice commonly known as 'going out to eat' is known as 'staying home and cooking'. There is signifigant evidence that dispite its lack of commercial appeal, 'staying home and cooking' can actually be quite good for you.

I appreciate that you brought this question up but they are not the only culprits. I guess as a MOM you will have to do what I do until the situation changes, carry a bottle of Purell in your pocket.
