How does a predominantly Catholic country reconcile the apparently exclusive ideas of traditional religious modesty and the apparently hedonistic Carnival?

First, though DarthDad's answer sounds impressive, the exact same question could apply to New Orleans and Mardi Gra ... the heritage is the same.

Brazil is perhaps the only country in South America which has never flirted with Socialism - why is that? In light of that history, what do the people themselves first KNOW about socialism, and second FEEL about it.
