I used to have a major problem with this and was eventually taught (by someone older and wiser) that fighting the stereotype was the wrong thing to do... I had to EMBRACE the stereotype.
My problem was that I was a young female in a male-dominated "old-boy network-type" world. I was really afraid that my youth would make me look incompetent or inexperienced, and my femininity would make me seem "soft." I spent alot of time and energy working hard to fight this stereotype...
Then, I realized that the one thing that I considered a weakness - being a young female - could actually be my greatest strength! Now, I embrace all that I am, and use it to my advantage. For instance... many businessmen, upon meeting me for the first time, do assume that I'm inexperienced and probably don't know what I'm doing... I think this is a GREAT thing... This usually makes them relax their demeanor around me - and they will usually eventually reveal important information (that I can use to my advantage during later negotiations).
Embrace who you are... it might just be your greatest strength.

Adopting sterotypes comes along with having a culture. So everyone is at least a little prejudiced. But most stereotypes are not based on anything other than individual experiences and word of mouth, neither of which are sound methods for finding objective truth. Challenge your stereotypes by going out and really experiencing new things and new people. Then you'll be better equipped to make sense of things.

While many may jump on you for stereotyping or generalizing, I feel that neither is wrong as long as it is 80% or more true. People who have a problems with that know only too well that it will be easier to lash out at you for telling it like it is, than for them to take a deep look at themselves and wonder if there is some true to what they're saying.
The 20% of the people who are exceptions will seldom if ever take issue, because they know it doesn't apply to them.

I find stereotypes to be grains of truth, bits and peices of who the person is. Most people go beyond what group they consider themselves to be part of and who they make themselves to be to the world.
I would say try something that isnt expected of you, then you wont be so stereotypical.

Do some soul searching; quiet times and silence help for that. Once 'there', ask yourself what makes you uniquely you and strive to emphasize those aspects of yourself from now on. Of course, if you're unique for illegal or undesirable reasons, then you may want to use your silent periods to re-invent yourself. Try, then, to reformulate yourself, so you will seek to be uniquely and desirably you somehow.

expand... meet people outside your school..neighborhood...town..etc. irish..in your school are different..in a poorer..or richer school... or at a school in a different city or state. people are different from different families. meet people of different social levels... educational levels. it is impossible for all people of a certain group..race or religion to be the same. there are stingy whites..blacks ..puerto ricans..and there are giving whites.blacks..puerto ricans. not all robberies are one group.. not all unwed pregnancies are one group.. but media.. and reports tend to center around one group. research and you will be surprised at the statistics..etc. the same with food.. there are italians who hate spaghetti and blacks who hate chicken..and irish who do not drink. we have heard all of these and they just are not true.

educate yourself, and put yourself in their shoes, i bet you get stereotyped a lot unfairly, ignorance is the basis for all stereotyping and discriminatin and racism therefore to cure yourself of that, get to know them better and try to learn about who you're stereotyping
