The accepted, non-wacko explanation is that the 50s were a time of GREAT avionic research (U-2, SR-71, Flying Wing). Lots of these secret planes, which looked like things no one had ever seen before, were flown at night in the high desert of Nevada. Encouraging reports of UFOs helped provide cover and secrecy for these experimental aircraft.
Politics are so partisan nowadays, that if there was any REAL evidence of UFOs, someone in government would have leaked it and it would be out there.
The truth is out there. And the truth is there is very little evidence for UFOs.
Of course, I'm an alien from Saturn's 3 moon, so you probably shouldn't take my word for it ...

I think it has a lot to do with the literature of the time which inspired movies, which in turn inspired the general public to look up and wonder. I am not sure if I believe we are visited on a regular basis by extra-terrestrials so I am thinking it has a lot to do with the popular media at the time and man's need to find something bigger and better. There was an excellent book written by C.G. Jung about the psychology of it all. I don't remember the title but it was interesting the way one of our founding fathers of analytical psychology dissected the phenomenon. You might try checking your local library to see if Jung's works are well represented there, and if not there try Amazon for Jung titles.

That was in beginnings of the Cold War and every nation was trying to hide it's attempts to create armaments and flying machines. They didn't want to admit to their progress or failures so they lied when they were found out. I vividly remember the report of a short winged, V-shaped aircraft with an egg-shaped dome in it's center. The craft moving swiftly, quietly and with amazing agility so MUST have been alien. The pictures of it looked EXACTLY like the stealth aircraft the US has been using. UFOs are just another way our governments deceive us.

As people became increasingly technologically conscious, they looked to less superstitious explanations to mysterious sightings.
previously, they tended to identify the unusual as spirits, angels or ghosts.
plus an incredible increase of air traffic at night became possible after WWII due to a number of technical innovations.
More sightings= more unexplained sightings.
Plus people WANTED to believe.
Remember the War of the Worlds radio scare of 1938?

ufo stands for Ur Far Out, man. UFO's don't exist. I didn't see an alien, except once, but that ain't proof that they exist.
