I need to know what I can do to prevent people from gaining information about my computer, such as where I am located, my I.P address etc. Someone has been harassing me and though I have moved several times (different states even) they always know where I live based on something they did to bring up info on my computer. How do I prevent this, as I dont want anyone knowing where I live etc..

use a proxy. he could be finding you and information on you in a few ways, one of them would be to use a locator using your ip. using a proxy would mask your ip and make it look like a different one. you can find a list of proxies that are free if you search for "proxy list" in google and it should be the second one or someting, you can just choose one and in Interent Explorere go to Tools < Internet Options < Connections < LAN Settings < Use A Proxy Check Box < Enter The Proxy (The IP) < Then Enter the Number after the colon in in the ports box < Check Bypass Proxy Server < Hit OK and you are done.

Now your ip will be masked and no info will be found using your ip

Wow, that is creepy.

Alright, first you have to make sure they are locating you through the Internet (and not calling one of your friends, or something that is completely unrelated to computers).

You should then scan your computer for any viruses or keyloggers. You can do this with any antivirus program. If you do not have one, you can try Trendmicro Housecall [see first source].

Afterwards, you should scan for any spyware or malware. Although it probably isn't how he/she is finding you, better safe than sorry. You should try Lavasoft's Adaware [see second source] and Spybot S&D [see third source]. If you want to be extra safe, there are a variety of other spyware scanners that you can easily find through Google.

If you want to make sure there is nothing wrong with your computer, you can also check out Hijackthis [see fourth source] and analyze the log file with the Hijackthis analyzer [see fifth source].

Now, for your IP address. Sometimes, they may be able to discover your general location with your IP address (although it is most of the time as an estimate). If you want to be safe, you should use a proxy, and one that is extremely secure. You may have to pay for some of the better ones. See [sixth source] for a link to a Wikipedia article on proxies and links to some popular proxy software near the bottom.

Make absolute sure you are not leaking your real name or any other sensitive information on the Internet. I am not an expert on this, but never leak out information such as credit card, social security, your real name, etc on forums or anywhere else. People may be able to use this information to find you if they have the right contacts.

You may also consider installing a firewall on your computer and block all necessary ports. Often, you might only need port 80 open (for browsing on the web). A list of popular firewall software is [seventh source]

Finally, all this is a means to protect your computer from intrusion. If they are getting their information another way, there is nothing you can do. If you feel it necessary, be sure to contact the authorities as that is the best option.

as far as i know you can only mask/proxy it. This only helps when you access a website. From what you said, if you have moved and this person still knows where you are, it sounds like they are tracking you. You might have a trojan or virus on your system that they have access to that is relaying your info. In this case, proxying your IP might not work. This is the only thing i can think of, becuase if you have moved and changed service providers, you will get new IPs... Even with the same account, your IP should change periodically (ex monthly).

(It is possible for them to know your IP if you still chat with them throught the internet. Lookup IP proxying, or anonymous internet surfing on google)

If you keep moving and the person is following you, or gathering your information it would be smart to contact the local authorities and worry less about how to hide your ip address...after all they already have your information right? Protect yourself and be safe. Contact the authorities! Don't take chances, the internet can be a scary dangerous place. (BTW most ip addresses only stay the same if you have cable internet)

you can't
don't use a computer
don't use the post office
don't have a bank account
don't get a job
don't pay taxes
don't get a drivers license
that will limit where people can find information on you
