I have been having a difficult time falling asleep. Has there been any trials on the effectiveness of melatonin?

It's a herb. It is not a medication. Herbs are pretty safe to take. I take it occassionaly. It just relaxes you so that you can fall asleep. It really does not make you feel sedated and groggy like sleep medication does. And you are not all hungover in the morning. It great. Look it up on the net if you need more research.

Melatonin works for some. I would personally recommend taking a Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) instead. It kicks in after about half an hour, and it is safer & not habit-forming. The only drawback there (for me, at least) is that it wears off after about 4 hours and that's usually when I wake back up. A doctor can prescribe all sorts of sleeping pills, but they're usually dangerous and give unpleasant nightmares & other side effects.

I used Melatonin twice a week. It helps me fall asleep, which is what I care about.

There is also Valerian Root (a natural sedative) and Tryptophan (a natural amino acid that induces sleep - it has an unusually high concentration in turkey, which is why you often feel sleepy after the big Thanksgiving Day meal).

I rotate the three of these ... as well as a low dose of aspirin at night (mandatory for anyone over 30 for cardiovascular health).

Rotating helps me maintain the effectiveness of all.

Best to you ...

It has been shown to work in some cases, HOWEVER, not many studies have been done on the side effects, so you could very easily have a severe reaction to it...you would be better off trying a prescribed sleep aid that isn't habit forming.

your brain produces melatonin, to help you sleep better and longer take 5mg before bed that will give you a boost. It really helps and it is safe. Keep your bedroom very dark that will help your brain produce more melatonin.
