i have a 96 prizm (corolla) when it starts the belts squeal for like 5 seconds and also i hear like a slight knocking from that side of the engine I also had a honda civic it would make the noise from the same side of the engine and it ran for probaly 80,000 more miles does anyone have the same problem and could someone give me an idea what it could be

Probably not the water pump. Probably a fan belt problem. They make a spray that you can get at the auto part store for squealing belts. Just spray it on your fan belt. It should stop the squealing.

Usually when a water pump goes bad it makes a whirring sound and leaks from the bottom of it , out of a little weep hole is what they call it . Get your belts or belt replaced .

Sounds like loose belts. If it was a seized water pump it would do it all the time.

Sounds like your belt isn't tight enough. Take it to a mechanic and have him check it. It may need to be replaced..
