You don't NEED a router, tho it's definately a good idea. Particularly if you have a USB modem, you could also try a crossover cable.
It's the same as a network cable (RJ-45 to RJ-45 if you're interested) but there's several wires as 'crossed over' - hence the name of the cable. It doesn't work as well as a router/switch, but it'l do the job. Windows should be able to setup the IP addresses/DNS lookups. Be sure that your desktop is running the modem, tho - as it'll also act as server to your Notebook.
I know this works as I have it setup in front of me doing just that:)
It won't give you the expandability of a router and you won't be able to connect additional computers to it - but as a cheap solution, it does work rather well in the short term. If you find yourself needing to even out the bandwith some more later, you can always invest in a router then.
Hope this helps.

Buy a router. If you have a newer laptop more than likely you will need a wireless G router. If it is an older one then you might need a wireless B router. Make sure you look in to that before you buy one. Best Buy has them on sale cheaper than wal-mart and often times you can get them with a rebate. I got mine from there. My router is hooked into my cable modem into my desktop then my laptop has a wireless card that picks up my connection. It works excellent! :-) Good luck!
