It's actually a decent deal for thee Yankees. They basically rent a 5th starter for the rest of the year. Lidle is a Free Agent after '06. They get a Right Fielder in Abreu through the end of '08, and it basically costs them the salaries of the players. This is like signing two mid-season free agents.
They didn't give up much by way of prospects. C.J. Henry has some potential, but since he's a shortstop and Jeter and ARod are both Yankees, I doubt he had any chance of ever playing as a Yankee in the Majors, he was destined to be dealt from the moment he was drafted. He's mad young, 20. But, he's yet to hit above .249 in the minors. The LHP Matt Smith might be the most productive guy the Phillies get in this deal. He's turned the corner as a relief pitcher the last three seasons in the minors. Pitching to a 2.50 ERA with a WHIP of 1.30. Pitched 12 innings in the bigs this year not allowing a run.

Lidle is a pretty good edition to the team, but Abreu wasn't necessarily needed. With his addition, the Yanks will have more than enough outfielders IF they make the postseason. Then again, I'm guessing the trade was made in order to MAKE THE POSTSEASON

Abreu will help them while sheffield is hurt but the salary of $34 million over the next two years seems kind of high. When you add in the fact that the yankees now have six starting outfielders, Abreu,Damon,Cabrera,Matsui, Sheffield and Williams, when they all get healthy, which three will complain the least about playing time? Cabrera will be sent down and Williams will be released, but who do you sit?

Many times the Yankees have traded for some big hitter only to have them come to NY and can't handle being under the mircoscope.
It will have to be a wait and see thing

It was a good thing because the Yankees need more pitching and another power hitter. Georgie Porgie is totally wrong. The Yankees WILL go to the playoffs this year!!!!

Abreu is on the decline.
Another classic case of the yankees stealing what everyone else wants.
But it won't work this time.
The yankees WILL NOT make the playoffs this year.

well..the yankees will add another bat which they dont need..they need pitching badly...adding offense will help them compete with the red sox, but it wont help them in the playoffs because they dont have pitching...lidle isnt a good pitcher...he was with the a's, and sucked, and still sucks..his era is high in the nl east, so see wut happens when he enters a powerhouse of hitters in the al east like ortiz, ramirez, glaus, wells, tejada, etc.
