Breastfeeding produces a chemical that tells the body not to menstrate (sp). Some women can go months and even years without menstrating, while others who breastfeed can begin bleeding a few weeks after birth. You can get pregnant even if you havent started your period if you concieve right at your first ovulation (your first egg release) even before you bleed. It happens more than you think especially if you have a healthy sex life, and dont use protection. Once your period comes, then you can get pregnant. Hope this helps.

Breastfeeding is actually a very reliable form of birth control....IF you do extended or "ecological breastfeeding" which most American women don't.

This type of breastfeeding keeps you infertile for 1-2 years. Most American women do a modified form which does not have the constant suckling of the baby at the breast. They may pump the milk, or may breastfeed but also give some formula. Or breastfeed and offer a pacifier often. Or even breastfeed during the day but let the baby sleep through the night. The key to staying infertile while breastfeeding is to let the baby suckle frequently ALL throughout the day and night and as you can see, many American practices take the baby away from the breast.

But extended/ecological nursing is still done in more rural/primiative cultures (and by many American women now, too). Studies have shown, for instance, that African women in primitive villages naturally space their children 2 or 3 years simply by this type of breastfeeding.

Also keep in mind that many women actually ovulate BEFORE they get their first post-baby period. So you might ovulate before having a period or bleeding episode.

The only way to tell when your fertility is returning when breastfeeding is to keep tracking your mucus and temperature signs while nursing. You can't rely on getting a period first to alert you.

There's also a great book that covers all of this in depth - The Art of Natural Family Planning

The time you get pregnant can be the first time you ovulated while breastfeeding... It CAN happen - in fact, it happened to my lactation consultant! Her newborn was only 3 months old when she got pregnant!

I got pregnant while breastfeeding too, but my period had returned... I'm now 5 months pregnant and chasing a toddler!

OVULATION.

It can happen regardless of breastfeeding and no period.

If you breastfeed 100%, absolutely NO supplementing for the first 6 months straight and you get NO period, you have about a 99.8% chance that you won't.

If you supplement even once, or get one period, you have every chance.

Just use contraception, it's not worth the risk.

Very possible. Breastfeeding doesn't really work too well as a contraceptive. However I think one should wait until the oldest child is older and done nursing before trying to conceive again.

I don't know but my mom got pregnant with me four months after having my brother and she was breast feeding (plus using a diaphragm... apparently I was just a determined little swimmer)
