the pound sign is above the number three, how hard can it be to use it?

My guess is that since the "pound" sign is not a standard keyboard character, there is no specific place for it to occur in a font. They may be using as font that has the "pound" sign as character 153 in the font, but you are using a font that has the J as character 153, so it displays the wrong character.

I think it has to do with what is called character encoding.
possibility 1. your browser is expecting a certain character encoding e.g.unicode but the website is displaying another.
set you browser to auto detect character encoding its in the view tab on fire fox its probably in internet options on ie
the site is telling your browser that it is encoding the web page in one format but delivering it in another.

on some sites i see the pound sign as an upside down '?' ... its bothering me too. skynews.co.uk has this problem quite often
