I have had many breeds of dog, including Pugs, a Miniature Schnauzer, Bull Mastiffs, a Maltese Terrier, a Mini Foxy, a Jack Russel, a Bull Arab etc., but the most easy to train dogs I have ever owned are American Pitbull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers. They probably aren't as small as you would like, but they are incredibly intelligent and loyal. I know people are afraid of these dogs because of the things they read, but in fact with a bit of research you will find out just how incorrect the information provided by the media is. If you are willing to give it a chance, I think that a Pitbull/Amstaff could be perfect for you.

Of the small breeds I like beagles the most. They are small, short-haired (less shedding and less grooming), and generally smart. They're great with kids (I had them growing up) and are cheerful and easy-going. That said, they can be barkers...but if you train them at a young age (i.e. discipline when they do bark) you shouldn't have a problem. They can also have their crazy moments, ours is a year old and she sometimes runs around the house like a wild child....but kids love that and they're wonderfully playful. Unlike other breeds, their excitability isn't constant and they get calmer and calmer with age. (Mine is sleeping with my husband right now.) They're smart and easy to train and an all-around enjoyable breed.

No offense meant, but it's more a question if the owner is trainable. Even "Puppy Kindergarten" classes are actually for the owner, not for the dog.

Before you get a dog, please ask yourself if you think you can live with one for the next 12-15 years, their approximate life span. It is very much like having another child (costs, supervision, teaching) but without the wardrobe! If the answer is not a resounding "YES!", then pass on getting a dog.

get a minitaure beagle! I have one, it has only bark twice in her lifetime, and is the most friendliest dog in the world. She also knows the basic: sit, down, lay, shake, ect., ect.
