I'm currently looking to move to Birmingham for a few years whilst I finish off my degree in maths with the open university, mainly because where I live there is so little work I thought it wise to move to the closest city to me.
I've had a good look at some of the "flatshare" websites to get an idea of the prices, but to be honest I haven't got a clue what the different areas of Birmingham are like to live and work in. I've spent a fair amount of time in Selly Oak as some of my mates live their whilst at Uni and it seems abit of a **** hole in all fairness.
I was wondering if there are any particually rough areas of Birmingham in which one wouldn't like to reside, even if only for a few years?
Also, on the subject of employment, where would the majority of the jobs be based, in the city centre I would assume, but is there anywhere else high in white-collar employment I could look into?
Any help from you Brummies would be really helpful, ta.

Solihull, Edgbaston and Sutton Coldfield are decent areas.

There are a majority of jobs in the Birmingham City Centre.

Alum Rock, Sparkhill, Sparkbrook Newtown, Lozells and sometimes Handsworth can be a bit notorious in the news as well.

All major buses and trains go into and out of the city centre.

Hope this helps
