Be prepared to work you @$$ off. It takes a LOT of hard work to be good, and then you are extreamly underappreciated by the world, and get scrwed over by many bigger names in music.
If you want to work in the music industry: you do it because you love it and could picture yourself no where else. Not because it is fun. You are under apprechiated, underpayed, and pretty much at the bottom of the chain for your whole life unless you are one of the very few who make is somewhere.
Just be prapared for everything and anything. And good luck!

Wow.....
There is a lot of answers to that question.
It really depends on what type of music career you want to start.
Any serious career in music requires much training (as in a 4 year degree i.e bachelor of music degree, from a conservatory or university)
Even with all that is is VERY competitive, rarely pays well. You don't just up and start a career, it requires a lot of forethought (as in several years)
It is rarely what you expect. For example, did you know that the largest employers of professional musicians are, in this order:
US Army
US Navy
US Marines
US Coast Guard
Annheuser Busch
Disney Productions
Anyway, bottom line is it requires much more preparation than most peole believe, and you have to specialize in an instrument genre. You haven't given very much info to go on, but I hope this helps.

Always have a plan "B" in case your music career doesn't pan out. It's a horrid, beastly business, so be prepared for disappointment.
