Yes. I know that equilibrium is a state of balance and precarious means "affording no ease or reassurance." It would really help if someone who is familiar with the exact term has some input. Thanks.

Usually the term used is "unstable equilibrium". You are correct when you state that equilibrium is a state of "balance".

In an *unstable* equilibrium, a small disturbance (the word "perturbation" is often used) causes the system to move out of equilibrium. Imagine a large rock balanced on a small pillar. For the moment it is in equilibrium, but one small push and ... CRASH!

A *stable* equilibrium is insensitive to small disturbances. Imagine a rock sitting at the bottom of a deep valley. Shove it and it simply rolls back into place.
