Realism is commonly defined as a concern for fact or reality and a rejection of the impractical and visionary. As a word in common use, however, realism is employed to suggest a wide variety of meanings, the choice among them depending on the context of use and the pertinent community of interpretation, from the arts, especially film, literature, and painting, to philosophy, politics, and international relations.
Realism in art and literature is the depiction of subjects as they appear in everyday life, with minimal embellishment or interpretation. The term is also used to describe works of art which, in revealing a truth, may emphasize the sordid or ugly.
Realism also refers to a mid-19th century cultural movement with its roots in France.
The 2nd Half of the 19th Century has been called the positive age.

In Great Expectations, Realism is seen in the depiction of the class structures Pip notices in his travels- how the rich are pompous and greedy while the poor are humble and giving. It also refers to the real locations mentioned in the novel and the fact that the story is a semi-autobiographical work.

Can't really remember any quotes but the realism of the novel is in the everyday life it portrays. Dickens is brutally honest when showing everyday life among the poor and imprisoned. So go look up passages, sentences and quotes that describe the everyday lives of the people and the times. Hope it helps.

That was one of the most contrived books I've ever read. The entire thing was as shallow as a puddle of water in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
