How can I get more food in Virtual Villagers. My berries are running out.?

I'm just starting Virtual Villagers and my people are almost out of berries. How do I find other resources for food?

you need to spend tech points on farming and then you will be able to farm on the soil just south of the research station and just north of where the broken boat was. In order to get the tech points you may need to have your people do some research.
