First, CONGRATULATIONS!!! May you find a lifetime of happiness.

The best man maintains the wedding rings, but...
As groomsman, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to facilitate a smooth-flowing wedding experience. Your main duties are three-fold:

* Provide moral support for the groom
* Usher the guests
* Escort the bridesmaids

WHAT YOU NEED TO PAY FOR....
* Wedding attire rental
* Travel expenses (if out-of-town)
* Wedding gift for the couple
* Bachelor party given by best man and/or ushers

and....USHER GUESTS....
On the actual wedding day, arrive at the site an hour early. Have someone attach your boutonniere (this is your badge of honor for the day) and put on a big smile. As an usher you should have a list or have gone over the seating plan with the bride and groom prior to the wedding. This way you will be able to smoothly escort all the guests to their seats.

For a more detailed idea of the groomsmen’s ushering duties and how to seat the guests see “10 Things Your Ushers Should Know”

and let's not forget....ESCORT BRIDESMAIDS.....
Once all you ushers have seated the mother of the bride, the wedding is ready to begin. Sometimes the groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle and other times the groomsmen will enter the church (or other ceremony location) with the best man and groom. After the ceremony, the groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle following the bride and groom.

Now, on to the fun...RECEPTION....
Formal pictures of the bridal party are usually taken between the wedding and the reception. Groomsmen must be present for these but all you need to do is smile!

By the time of the reception, your groomsmen’s duties are basically over. Usually there is a dance for the wedding party and groomsmen are expected to dance with the bridesmaids. You should also probably get one dance with the bride (it’s good luck!). The rest of the night is your own to enjoy and to celebrate!

Before the wedding, groomsmen mostly are responsible for helping the groom to breathe, and look calm and composed the day of the event. This sometimes involves a bachelor party, but that is not required.

During the wedding, there should be as many groomsmen as there are bridesmaids. There should be one best man, to match the maid of honor as well.

While the guests arrive, they stand about, greet people, look charming, help people find the restroom, refreshments, and take them to their seats... making sure there is room in the front for the family of the couple.

Just before all the pomp and circumstance, the best men often assist female members of the couple's family to sit down, just as the bridesmaids often do so for the male members of the family.

When the wedding begins, the best men line up next to the bridesmaids in a line. The best men walk with the bridesmaids, arm in arm up to the altar. The best men hold out their left arm, and the bridesmaids grasp this with their right arm, so that the best men are on the right.

They walk directly up the aisle, and then split off at the front. The first pair go far apart to the sides, the second pair go a little bit closer, and at the very last, the best man and the maid of honor go just far enough apart for the priest, bride, and groom to stand in front and get married. All the bridesmaids and groomsmen stand up straight, and evenly spaced apart.

The men clasp their hands in front of them, and generally turn a bit to face the couple. For ceremonial purposes, the groomsmen sometomes carry decorative swords at their hips. The swords should not be used unless someone actually speaks up after the priest says "Speak now or forever hold your peace."

They usually just stand around looking good, and exchanging a few quiet, and smart remarks with each other until the ceremony begins, and they behave themselves completely.

Occasionally, the best man is called upon to double as a ring bearer, but this requires a trusted friend, or a great sense of humor. Traditionally, the best man will ham up the giving of the rings by patting all his pockets before finding an empty ring box, and he will then need to remember that in order to ensure the safety of the wedding rings, he planted them firmly on his toes. This is followed by removal of the shoes and socks on at least one foot to retrieve the rings. (Gross, and not proper for the solemnity of most weddings!)

After the bride and groom walk out of the church, the groomsmen then proceed towards the center of the aisle, offer their arms to the bridesmaids, and follow the bride and groom out to the reception.

The groomsmen at the reception once again greet people, and help them to their seats, after which the groomsmen propose toasts, and regal the guests with embarrasing stories about the groom to match the sentimental stories the bridesmaids tell about the bride. The level of embarrasment should match the level of sentimentality, as a way to help ensure that everyone either maintains a certain level of dignity, or is enormously entertained by the whole proceeding.

At some point, the bride throws a boquet, and the groom tosses that thing the bride wears around her thigh. the grooms must attend this, cheering on the ladies to try and catch the boquet, and (if single) lining up to try and catch the thing the groom throws.

If alcohol is to be served at the wedding, the groomsmen may be called upon to serve as bouncers, and assist the overly-drunk people to the toilet, to the cab, or out of the building before anyone gets hurt. For this reason, they should remain sober.

Generally the groom's party must provide the liquid refreshments for the reception, so they should be willing to help the groom decide what to get, and how much, keeping in mind their role as bouncers.

The groomsmen are also sometimes given the task of providing the "just married" transportation, and decorating it appropriately... especially at large weddings, where the family of the couple have beaten themselves silly about eveything else.

A groomsman is not the best man, but has an important role. After totally corrupting the groom to be at the bachelor party andt doing his best to talk the groom out of a life commitment of marriage, he brings the drunken groom on time to the wedding and stays ready to catch him if he falls. (oh ya, he also reminds the best man to bring the ring for the bride, a much less important task.)
