Elephants are among the most intelligent animals in the world.
they also have among the largest brains.
Great apes and dolphins have better memories, but few other creatures do.
elephants get their reputation by being the most intelligent creature ancient humans were acquainted with.
Dogs were taken for granted as human companions, and the great apes and dolphins weren't studied well until modern times, so there is not the same body of lore and myth surrounding them.

Although elephants do have good memories, they forget once in a while. Possessing a good memory helps elephants survive in the wild. It enables them to find food and water during times of drought and avoid danger when necessary.
