You and your family drive from your home in South Carolina (which is a state on the east coast for those of you who aren't familiar with the location of states in our country) to the beach. That takes you about an hour, as you don't live too far away. You and your family sit on the beach, waiting for the sunset. It doesn't come. There is nothing blocking your view of the ocean. You don't look the other way or close your eyes. There isn't some once-in-a-blue-moon eclipse or something that is affecting the sunset. Why don't you see it?

(no cheating)

Because the sun sets in the West. I was disappointed by that very realization a few years ago upon a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Being from the west coast, it hadn't occurred to me before that you East-coasters don't get to watch the sun disappear into the ocean at sunset.

You can see the sun rise over the ocean though, which is also lovely.

The sun sets in the West......you are on the East coast.

Come back in about 12 hours and you will get a great sunrise.

The sun rises in the east. It doesn't set on the beach. I live on the beach in SC so I know that one for sure.

The sun sets behind you. California gets to see it set over the water, not you. You get to see the sun rise the next morning though, if you wait long enough.....

Well if nothing is blocking your veiw of the ocean, and you do not look the other way, that is why you missed it, if you are looking at the ocean it is behind you to the west!
