If he had an estate, then the executor of the will would have the information. If your mom was the executor, then you're screwed.

Smack your mom (just kidding). Losing the paperwork can be a BIG problem - do you know where the money is located? You should be asking a lawyer these questions. An estate lawyer, to be specific.

If all the paperwork has dissppeared, your great-grandfather's estate may have to go into probate, and all the money may wind up getting taken by the state or the federal government.

Those kind of papers need to be locked away safely, like in a safe or a safe deposit box. Good luck if you can't find them.

Go to the court house wgere the will was probated and get a certfied copy of it. That way you know the facts of the trust . Does the will say you have to have trustees , if so who are they ? You may need to get a lawyer . If you do make sure that he charges a flat fee and not percentage of how much the trust is. If you have trustees then you have to get an ok from them to use the money. Remember the money you use for school can be taken off of your taxes.

Go to the County Courthouse where he lived, and check with the County Clerk's Office to see if he had filed a will in the county. You can get copies of it from the Clerks Office. Find out who the attorney was that filed the will. Go to that attorney and request copies of the will. Most wills and money left to survivors in trusts become available to survivors after they become 21 or 25 yrs old. Ask other family members who may have been included in his will for their copies. It sounds strange that your mom "lost" this important paperwork. She may have had 10 yrs to spend your inheritance.

How could you mom be so irresponsible. If she is then I wonder if maybe she has taken the money herself somehow. I was the executor over my parents estate and believe me if she wanted it she could have gotten it. Executors have all of the access to accounts and everything. Don't let whomever was the executor get by with telling you that they forgot where the paperwork is or where the money is located because that is hog wash. Good Luck

You can, you can go to the courts for lost documents. Most trusts require an individual to be of the legal age of 21 or 25

As another said, Find the executor of the will. That needs to be the first thing you have to do. Next, if there is no way of contacting the executor of the will, then possibly contact someone from the State Department and tell them your story to see if they wont help.

There will be a copy of the will at the lawyers where he wrote the will. You probably don't know where that is so I suggest going round/phoning all the local offices nearby where he lived. Hope that helps.

Your mom didn't "lose" the paperwork.

Find out who the trustee is and ask them for an accounting of your trust funds.
