Anyone can apply for welfare, but it does not mean you will receive it. You have to go through an application process, fill out paper work, show proof of your income, citizenship, and proof all assets, including cash in your bank accounts and child support [which does count as income]. The services you receive will be based on need after your application is processed.

I am a licensed social worker in the state of Michigan, and I am only familiar with the laws in this state. Every state has different guidelines they follow to determine eligibility. For instance, some states will only pay for 2 children; if you have more, you are on your own. There is a time limit that one can be on welfare and it is usually 3 to 5 years, once again, depending on where you live.

There are some programs associated with welfare that are actually a benefit for families and the country. For instance, most all states provide help with daycare cost for employed parents. In this state you need not be a single mom to receive these benefits. They are available to married couples as well. This enables people to work and be self-sufficient, while knowing their children are being well cared for. It appears the citizens would much rather spend tax dollars on daycare, knowing the parents are working and putting those tax dollars back in the system.

Please note, if you are healthy, over the age of 18, single or married with no children, chances are you will not qualify for assistance from social services; because you are employable. They may be able to issue some type of emergency assistance for 14-30 days, with the stipulation that you go to an employment agency.

Hope this helps.

Most welfare payments are aid to families. It depends on your state how much you receive or what income you can have, but it's just basic living expenses and some health coverage. You don't pay taxes on payments.

And contrary to what some people believe, there is a five-year time period that welfare can be received, the single parent has to work, and in 24 states there is no additional monies paid for each additional child.

Although paid for largely by federal tax dollars, welfare is managed individually by the states, and each has its own qualifications, etc. The best way to find out is to find out what it's called in your state and go to their website.
