Here are some suggestions:

1. Run 4 or 5 days a week. Rest days are very important.
2. Once or twice a week, run intervals of 400 m sprinting, alternated with easy jogging.
3. Run with someone faster than you occasionally.
4. Join a track team, if you haven't already. Your coach will know drills designed to make you faster.
5. Find your best distance. I am fastest at middle distances; some people are great sprinters, still others at long distances.
6. Wear good running shoes. Don't let them get too worn out.

Training. Training. Training. There's no shortcuts if you want to do it right. Start too quick you could get injured so you need to do it properly and there's no easy way around it.

First you have to decide whether you want to run sprints or distance. Then you need to decide what you are naturally best at and tailor your training around it to make yourself better at it.

If you are a distance runner then you want to build up to be able to consistently run at a comfortable pace for at least 5-7 miles. Start with conditioning. Once you get there, you have to train to do it faster and then work on techniques to help you in a race.

For sprints, it's a lot of repetition. Condition yourself to run 3 miles comfortably, then work on strengh training and lots of speed drills on the track.

Either way, nothing comes fast and easy. You have to work at it to get good. Just stay focused. Stick to your training goals. Warm up and stretch before every practice. Get plenty of sleep. Eat a balanced diet... You will get faster if you really want to.

Good luck.

Practice, practice, practice!

I have to stress this though. You don't want to overtrain as this can make you lose motivation in running.
