what if there are no references to check?

If the person has no references, chances are they are not getting hired. If they have previous employers, then the human resources department will call them if they're recent or something sounds fishy. Also, a lot of places will require you to take a test of some kind to determine your skill level before hiring.

If there are no references to check there is NO WAY I would hire the person, unless it was on a contractual basis with a probation period. I guess that could happen if they had immigrated or lived and worked in another country. Though I'd still think they could provide a reference from a job in that country.

If it is a lie about say a degree or academics the employer could ask the applicant to provide proof of the degree of diploma in the form of a school transcript or letter from the school.

Otherwise there's really no other way to tell that I can think of off-hand.

Checking references is vital.

There are always ways to check. It depends how concerned an employer is. Many employers use resumes as a hedge against guilt. If their Star Employee does go berserk and starts killing blond women named Karen, the feel they can whine and say "but he LIED on his resume," further condemning the criminal and absolving themselves of any guilt. But seriously, a few calls usually do it. You would be frightened how easily certain companies cough up info on a former worker - - - "Oh, Doug, yea, use to spend all morning in the employee's washroom pounding his pud, what else you need to know."

They can call the persons references that they list on the resume and the previous employers as well as the school that they put down where they received their education to verify it all.
