Excellent Question and I think the answer comes from the new school or the "hip hop' generation not knowing enough about the past. No old school black person in their right mind would ever use those words but the new school thinks its OK and when you got rap artists( and I use the term loosely) singin it and virtually all of suburban white america listening to it they would logically come to think its OK tooo but there is a double standard the black people can use the word on each other but a soon as a white folk do it whooooo let's call Jesse Jackson or the NAACP the word ****** is an offense no matter who uses it black or white Too many people have died not to be called tat word and now all these years later we are still callin ourselves that. The reason Why black folks still use this word on each other is twofold lack of black pride and to some black people when a black person call another a ****** to them it means partner friend or hommie so they can usethe word with impunity if a person considered an outsider to the race uses it then its considered fightin words notice I said outsider to the race it seems that ****** is being used by the other races as well only to address members of their own race I have seen and heard an Asain call another ****** but i am not sure if a non- member of another's race could use it cross cutlurally in any case it is WRONG to use that word period

It's called reclaiming the term. When a word is used to express hatred for a group of people often that group of people begin to use the term to give it less meaning for the people using it originally. Sometimes even making it a "good" word again for themselves. Then it becomes only ok to say if it applies to your group. This is found in most minority groups (homosexuals, african americans... etc). It keeps the majority of people who have privilege from abusing language to cause further discrimination.

Not if used between our race. For others it's still racial. For us it's something that people used to degrade us, so by us taking it and using it, it becomes less offensive eventually.

Until then, everyone has to deal with the fact that if you call a black person N***er it's offensive. We don't actually say n***er. we say N*gga. Changed it and embraced it.
