You don't get the choice while you are here in the physical dimension though. That only comes when you have returned to spirit, with the perspective that comes with your experience from all the lives you've lived, physical and spiritual. It comes at the soul level.
I believe that we choose our lives and it's major themes and challenges while we are still souls in the spiritual plane. We choose them for the evolution of our souls. When in the physical, we "forget" that this life is really all an illusion. We forget who we really are. And remembering brings enlightenment.
