area? I think you plug it in to the usb port, and push up a wee ariel thing, and you can connect as if by mobile phone. I'm not making this up - i have seen them! What are they called, and where can i buy one? What kind of cost are they? I'm in the UK, and would like to use it in the highlands of Scotland.

What you must be refering to is 3G /HSDPA card like Vodafone's or T-Mobile's - coverage not national yet
There are 3G/GPRS versions available as well: check local coverage in your area first!

They are free on a contract but monthly charges can be very high and contracts are usually 12months to 18 months; there are pay as you go tariffs available but again the charge is high and you will have to pay for the card (over£100).

My son travels all over USA. He is a long haul trucker. He has a telephone card in his notebook's pcmcia slot with which he can connect via his cell phone carrier to the internet. Not all areas where his cell phone works also have this internet connectability.

UK used to be several years ahead of USA in cell phone technology and may have what I discribed above. I would be surprized if they didn't.

I would check with your large computer stores to see what is currently available. Maybe even the Highlanders have this technology. I haven't been in UK for sometime, so I am not current.

I think you mean a blue tooth dongle. It connects your lap top to a mobile phone. I don't know much about them. Go to a specialist shop. Look at the links below. but it's better to talk to someone. I'd try Maplin and I'd try The carphonewarehouse. The former do all things electronic and the latter all things to do with mobile phones. It's an expensive option to get Internet access - so maybe set your Email client to hang up after you've uploaded and downloaded email.

Sounds like you are referring to a satellite card. Allows you to get Internet access if you are in an area that is covered by a sattelite broadcasting Internet signals. Do not know (as I am in the USA) who offers it in the UK, but it probably exist. Do a Google search for Internet Sattelite and you should be able to find it. Note that you will have to buy the card and subscript to a satellite Internet services (and they are not cheap). The Satellite Internet provider will be able to supply you with the card.

If your wanting wireless internet access then the card your looking for is a pcmcia card with a sim card in it, vodafone do them but be warned there very pricey.
