Deterrence. You deter the offender from repeating that crime (or others) and deter others from committing crimes.

There's also retribution - it makes you feel better to punish one who has hurt you.

Incapacitation - you can punish in a way that makes it impossible to commit crimes - like the middle eastern practice of cutting off the hands of thieves.

Depends on what kind and who. Are you talking about spanking a child or death penalty? Child development experts say that spanking is inefective as a teaching tool after about age 4. After that kids just start trying to figure out how to avoid the punishment rather than internalizing the moral lesson. On punishment in general experts say its value as a deterrent is based more on certainty than severity. A potential criminal is much more likely to decide not to commit a crime if he knows for a fact that he will be caught and sent to jail for a month than if the punishment is much greater but he has a good chance of getting off.

Punishment is necessary to individuals, as well as society. Part of maturation is learning that every action has a consequence. One of the basic laws of nature is that for every action, there is an opposite but equal re-action. Consequences and reactions can be positive OR negative, depending on the choices made by the individuals. It can be as basic as the concept that saying no to staying up late is also saying yes to feeling refreshed the next morning. It can be as complex as the arguments calling for capital punishment. The benefit is simple...we, as humans, are experiential learners. When consequences are sufficiently unpleasant, we tend to avoid them by doing whatever it is that the consequences are in place to re-enforce.
