True, belongingness is very important, especially to young people. So I'd say if a person is biracial, they'd be better served if they were raised to assimilate with whichever half they are around more. I mean, if a person is half black half white and lives around mostly white people, they'll adjust and belong better if they're socialized more according to white culture. And if that person later wants to discover more about black culture they should be encouraged to do so. But raising and socializing a child in a way that is against the surrounding culture doesn't make alot of sense if the need for belongingness is taken into account.

We all belong to the human race. Your are already part of a larger group. You are a unique. You are complete. Find joy in your uniqueness. No two people are the same. Even brother and brother or sister and sister may not share the same perspective on life or necessarily have anything in common. Don't let other people define you. Define yourself. The world is now dividing into social groups based more on intelligence and general interests more than anything else. Take time to find out who you really are and what values are important to you and express that. Be your self. Don't buy into something just because you read it in a text book.

Belonging begins at home. My nieces and nephews are all bi-racial as is my wife. They were all given complete love and acceptance in their families while growing up and all of them seem to have very well developed senses of self.
The inherent danger of Psychology is to oversimplify people into a collection of academic criterion. Maslow was speaking in a broader sense of a place in the world, not a collection of groups.

Make them live in a multi-cultural neighborhood. If anything they will learn to appreciate both their races. If they only know one race's way of living they would be missing out.
