Would it be illegal to borrow a cd from my family member to load it on my ipod? Cause i don't think it is but they do.

no its not illegal because the cd was purchased already and you are just using the copy for yourself, but it would be illegal to make copies of the cd then sell it

Actually, it is illegal. It's called copyright infringement. By copying a CD used by someone other than yourself, you are violating copyright and anti-piracy laws. Because you are not paying for that CD, the artist and label that made that CD don't get compensated for the copy you created. However, I doubt anyone would know you are doing it and the FBI probably won't be knocking at your door to see if the Shakira album on your ipod is from your own personal collection, or from someone else's.

So yes it's illegal, but no one will be able to enforce the law, so it is up to your conscious as to if you want to steal this music. If you were given that CD as a gift, or you bought the CD yourself, then you would have the right to make copies of it for personal use on a device like the ipod. But it would be illegal for you to give that CD to anyone else (even a family member) for the purpose of copying it for their own personal use.
