The bad news is, I shrink an inch every day also!

Don't believe me? Try this: before you go to sleep tonight, stand against a wall and measure how tall you are using a pencil. When you wake up the next day after a FULL NIGHT'S sleep, measure your height again next to last night's measurement. You will see you grew by half an inch to an inch, guaranteed!

The reason for this? In a word: Gravity!

People are taller after a long sleep 'cause the pads between their joints, especially the joints of the spine, are able to recover their shape. Pressure caused by our weight acting on the cushioning intervertebral discs between our vertebrae flattens them slightly during the day and fluid is squeezed from the discs during the day, but is reabsorbed during the night.

Basically, gravity shrinks you down about an inch vertically every day; you "unshrink" during the night back to your actual height!

So yes, you are actually taller than you said you were on your driver's license!!!

So what you're saying is that we grow one inch taller every *night*.

Luckily we do shrink an inch every day ... or else by age 15, we would be about 456 feet tall.

yes i knew it, but i enjoyed the way you presented it here, yes i liked it, thanx.

i can also add that i read spacesuits have to be made elastic because astronauts "grow" several inches after some time in zero G. i reckon it is important for those spacewalk suits - they would be too small if they were to just fit the "Earth size" of the astronaut...
