I believe that the functionalist perspective looks at all aspects of society and how they are interrelated. It also looks at how society survives by confronting internal and external problems, these are all part of a larger system. Society is viewed from this perspective as an organism (see August Comte, Herbert Spencer, and Robert Merton). They viewed society like this versus Marx/Engles and J. Collins who are Social Conflict Theorist or G. H. Mead who was Symbolic Interactionistic.
