I grew up in the 60's, and one of our favorite pasttimes was making and riding our own skateboards. We would take broken roller skates...the metal kind that you adjusted with a key and strapped to your shoes....and we would screw them onto 2 by 4's. We would then race them down the street at breakneak speed. As the road beside my house was a hill, this was quite daring. They only ever survived a few trips down before falling apart. But that didn't matter, as there was plenty of wood to be found for making the next skateboard even better.

We also made phones from cans and string. We used sticks for batons, clothesline poles for flagpoles, and off we marched down the street in our own mini-parade. Kazoos were fashioned from tissues and combs. Ahh, yes, those were the days.

Thanks for helping to bring back the memories.

My father drove trucks for a dairy for a while. He brought me home toy rocket ships, trains, cars, seats, and ladders--but the adults kept calling them "milk crates." :-)
